SECOND STAGE: TAKING OVER BY THE GOVERNMENT (1976-1985)

When in 1976, the Federal Government took over all the Teaching Hospitals in the country, the controls of constituent Institutions of the Institute of Health passed from the Ahmadu Bello University to the Federal Ministry of Health. An autonomous board of set up in 1977 and the Federal Ministry of Health start subverting the institute. The staffs were formally transferred from the University to the Board of Management of the Institute of Health. In the same year, however, the close relationship with the University continued.

Thus, 1976-1985 was the period of gradual disengagement from the University; with accompany handling over of some facilities to States Governments’ e.g. Nursing home in Kaduna, orthopedic Hospital at Dala, Kano ( 1980) school of Hygiene Kano ( 1984) and dispensaries in Samaru Zaria and Kaduna

THIRD STAGE: 1985 - PRESENT
With the promulgation of the teaching hospitals decree No1. 10 of 1st January 1985. The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital became legally and operationally separated from the University.

This notwithstanding, the close association and harmonious working relationship continued between Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and the host states. This as resulted into formal working cooperation agreements with the States Governments. Firstly with Kaduna state in 1982 and Katsina state in 1989.

PRESENT STATUS/ACTIVITIES
The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital are spread out between Kaduna, Zaria in Kaduna state and Malumfashi in katsina state. A distance of about 120km radius around Zaria. The administrative head quarter is located on the main campus of the University, in Samaru, Zaria.
SERVICES

Tertiary Health Care is offered at:

A) Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria ( 499 BEDS)

B) Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna (560 BEDS)

C) Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Malumfashi (130 BEDS)

They offer general out-patient services and 24-hour accident and emergency services. In addition, in-patients care is offered inn the main clinical specialties Primary Health Care is delivered at three different locations:

1. Urban Comprehensive Health Center Sabon Gari Zaria

2. Rural Comprehensive Health Center, Yakawada in Igabi Local Government Authority

3. Health Clinic, Ruwan Sanyi in Malumfashi L.G.A.

A new 540-bed Teaching Hospital is under construction at Shika near Samaru, Zaria, which is expected to be completed / commissioned soon. Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospitals has also been designated center of excellence in Radio Therapy and Oncology.

TRAINING SCHOOLS

Health man power development is a major activity of the Institution. Apart from providing facilities for the training of medical students of the faculty of medicine of Ahmadu Bello University, the A.B.U. Teaching Hospitals also offer training in the following schools:

B. School of Midwifery and Post Basic Nursing Training

C. School of Medical Laboratory Technology

D. School of Health Information Management ( School of Medical Records)

E. School of Bio-Medical ( Instrument Engineering)

F. Community Health OfficersTraining

G. Residency Training Programme

RESEARCH
Staffs are encouraged to carry out relevant Health Service Research into Health problems and conditions that are of priority concern. There is an interdepartmental endemic diseases research unit.
